I've adjusted to being gluten-free pretty well and don't miss too many food items anymore. There are so many substitutes out there now...or I've just learned to do without. Being gluten-free has certainly limited my donut options, though. Dunkin Donuts, in my opinion, has some really good donuts--none of which I can actually eat anymore. Last year I was thrilled when I read that Dunkin Donuts was testing gluten-free blueberry muffins and gluten-free cinnamon sugar donuts.

While there apparently is some debate over whether or not those with a gluten issue should avoid beauty products that contain gluten, I, in fact, am convinced that I need to avoid them. First of all, it doesn't make any logical sense to use a lip product with gluten in it: I chew my lips! Also, to use a hand lotion with gluten in it, in my opinion, seems to be asking for a problem.

Food and Fire in Johnson City is a great restaurant for anyone who cannot have gluten but still appreciates good food! I went there tonight and was very impressed with...everything! Our server was knowledgeable concerning gluten and also cross contamination issues. Not only was she able to tell me the gluten-free information, but she also knew it off the top of her head and didn't need to go check somewhere else while everyone in our party waited on me and my food issues (because, yes, that has happened to me in restaurants before...).

I haven't always been real daring when it comes to trying out new places to eat. With my gluten issues, it can be...kind of scary. I would say that finally, after several years of eating gluten-free, I now feel more confident to try new places. So, tonight, for the first time in about four years, I stepped foot inside a Friendly's.

Yesterday the hubs and I had a date. (YAY!) Before the babysitter came, I was scrambling around...getting everything ready. Once we were on our date, I realized that I hadn't really had enough to eat for lunch since I was so busy beforehand. Since we were going out to the movies, I figured I could grab something to eat...maybe not the most nutritious choice, but at least something gluten-free.

Although Christmas is over, I still like peppermint type recipes during this time of year. Here is a blog post I wrote for my old blog, G-free in Bing. Enjoy:
This recipe is so ridiculously easy, it’s almost embarrassing to share it. ANYWAY, I got this recipe from a little booklet from Current a looooooooooooooooong time ago. If you’re planning to make this and give it away as a gift, give it away quickly; you may be tempted to keep it for yourself!

I love buckwheat for many reasons. For one, I honestly get tired of rice. (Rice is in almost every single gluten-free substitute out there.) Secondly, it's high in protein. Also, it cooks pretty quickly. So, tonight I made a new side dish for the first time, and it was a hit with everyone. I will definitely be making this again. I simply followed the instructions on the box of buckwheat groats to cook them. I used broth (gluten-free vegetable broth) instead of water, and I tossed in a bunch of a garlic based spice combination that I like.
